The native procedure to join this site employed a verification email. However, I discovered that even without a verified email new users were created and allowed to participate. The process seemed to be vulnerable to invasion from unwanted sources so I disabled the ability of visitors to become a member to test. I couldn't replicate the problem. I removed the invaders and restored the ability for visitors to join but I disguised it somewhat while a helpful tech support guy investigates.
